Introduction
My name is Chris Johns and I’ve been messing about with steam toys now for over thirty years. I guess like many of us in our forties (and a little older) I first played with a Mamod Traction Engine (box of matches and bottle of meths) as a young lad. This was a time when engines were far more common and it wasn’t so unusual to spend a pleasant afternoon in the garden (with friends and their engines) testing the latest meccano creation or seeing just how much weight a model could pull behind it (not much).

Like many of us I gave up my engines as other pursuits became more interesting and only returned to steam when my own children fleetingly became interested in pistons and flywheels for a short while in 1999. They moved on to computer consoles and I became fascinated again in steam toys.

So now (September 2006) seems to be the time to try and record my collection and share it with others. I’ve always had a leaning towards mobiles and have quite a few Traction Engines, Steam Rollers and Vans.

I hope you enjoy looking at my collection. If any of the information I have recorded is incorrect please feel free to tell me. This is not always an easy hobby to get information about and it is only by sharing knowledge that we are able to keep some of these toys and the firms that made them alive.
